Hello, Northern Supporters!
Saturday, September 21st was our third “Anyone Can Cook” event, and despite a Penn State football game and Homecoming weekend, we had a nice turnout! I wanted to share the article PBF board member, Elizabeth Ayers, wrote for the Dillsburg Banner about this annual event.
“Food is art, and food is love. And we should show love and appreciation for those who cook it by eating it with relish.” – Mark Bittman
Those in attendance Saturday evening at Anyone Can Cook certainly ate with relish as twenty chefs offered delectable creations in the categories of appetizer/salad, soup/stew/chili, entrée, and dessert. It was a feast for all the senses with decorated booths reflecting the autumn season or the theme of the dish; the smells of spicy, savory, and sweet; the sound of live music by Northern High School English teacher COLETTE ECKERT, and of course a wide and varied spectrum of taste!
This event was hosted by the PBF at the pavilion at GREYSTONE BREW HOUSE in Dillsburg, and attendees enjoyed food samplings prepared by the chefs, drinks, and local craft beer from HEMAUER BREWING CO.

In the appetizer/salad category, it was Bacon-Wrapped Jalapeno Stuffed Shrimp from AQUAVISION POOL & SPA/BLUE DIAMOND POOL SERVICES, Buffalo Chicken Dip from the taproom of HEMAUER BREWING CO., Southwest Chicken Eggrolls from Todd Thomson at TEAM ONE AUTO GROUP, and Pickle Guacamole from DILLSBURG COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION.
In the soup/stew/chili category, the match-up was Pickle Soup by DILLSBURG COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION, Filipino Beef Machado by TERRAVIZ GEOSPATIAL, Cheeseburger Soup by SIMPLY CERAMIC TILE, and Dilly Cheesesteak Soup from LOCAL’S MARKET.
Next up, entrées: Grilled Picanha Steak with Chimichurri Sauce by AQUAVISION POOL & SPA/BLUE DIAMOND POOL SERVICES, Smoked Bacon Mac and Cheese by WEAVER’S OF WELLSVILLE Chicken Skewers with Peanut Sauce and Rice by H&H SALES ASSOCIATES, and Shrimp and Salmon Bites by BEAUTIFULLY CRAFTED EVENTS.

Now desserts (this is why we encourage stretchy waistbands); Blueberry Whoopie Pies by DILLSBURG KIWANIS CLUB, Polar Bear Paws by Dillsburg Elementary, Cannoli Dip by Melissa Rau, Whiskey Cake from NORTHERN YORK COUNTY HISTORICAL AND PRESERVATION (NYCHAP), Apple Cake from Fonda and Jonah Markley (representing GIVEN’S COFFEE), Pumpkin Cinnamon Roll with Brown Butter Icing from LOCAL’S MARKET, Homemade Limoncello by Richard Settle of H&H SALES ASSOCIATES, and Blueberry Cheesecake Squares by Jayme Slothower.
The attendees tasted and then voted for their favorite dish in each category, plus for the best-decorated booth. The votes were counted and here are the winners!
Appetizer Category Winner: Southwest Chicken Eggrolls by Todd Thomson of Team One Auto Group.

Soup/Chili/Stew Category Winner: For the SECOND YEAR, Cheeseburger Soup by Amy Davis and Damon Myers of Simply Ceramic Tile.

Entrée Category Winner: Chicken skewer with peanut sauce and rice by H&H Sales Associates.

Dessert Category Winner & Top Chef Winner (with the most overall votes): Blueberry Cheesecake Squares by Jayme Slothower.
As the Top Chef winner, Greystone Brew House will use Jayme’s recipe as inspiration for a limited-time menu item, with a portion of the sale of the item benefiting the PBF. Head over to Greystone and order the Blueberry Cheesecake Squares when it hits the menu! Congratulations Jayme!

Best Booth: Jayme Slothower & “You are my Butter Half.”

The Polar Bear Foundation extends its deepest gratitude to the chefs for their participation, generosity, and sense of fun. Each chef provided their supplies, which makes this a fruitful fundraiser with little overhead for the PBF. Special thanks to WASTE MANAGEMENT for donating trash boxes, the WELLSVILLE FIRE DEPARTMENT for loaning tables, and GOLDEN RENTALS for a quick takedown of the tent the next morning. Ticket sales, sponsors, and raffle ticket sales all go back to funding the PBF mission—enhancing Northern students’ education experience by funding grants teachers, staff, and booster clubs apply for throughout the year. Recent grants include TENTS for athletic teams to stay dry and cool at events, netting for the baseball batting cage, a BOOK VENDING MACHINE at South Moutain Elementary (SME) that ties into their good-behavior program, and supplies for the development talk given to all 5th graders. The PBF board reviews grant requests monthly: needs, inspiration, and opportunities are continually being recognized, and the PBF, with Northern Supporters’ help, will continue to respond.
And finally, thank you to Dillsburg-based “FOREVER ETCHED” for providing us with this year’s beautiful glass plate prizes!

With tremendous appreciation to all who gave their food as art and love, to all who ate with relish, and to all who volunteered with generous hearts, thank you!
Elizabeth Ayers

PBF PARTNERS GIVING TIERS
THANK YOU BUSINESS PARTNERS & BUSINESS CIRCLE MEMBERS
We couldn’t do all that we do without the generosity of our amazing community, especially our Annual Business Partners (former program) and Business Circle Members (new program)! As we begin this new school year, let’s take a moment to thank these businesses for their continued financial support.

PLEASE BECOME INVOLVED
The PBF relies on the generosity of local businesses, event sponsors, individual/family donors, and planned giving to raise money to fund the grants and scholarships the PBF offers to NYCSD staff, teachers, and seniors. To help simplify the process, we created PBF Partners Giving Tiers: BUSINESS CIRCLE (ideal for businesses and corporations) and SOCIETY (ideal for individuals and families who want to see their community continue to grow and flourish).
I invite you to learn more about the Giving Tiers (click on the logos below) and sign up for a membership plan (all plans include goodies)!

Until next time,

Since 2006, the Polar Bear Foundation has raised financial support beyond the reach of the regular school district budget for academic, athletic, and cultural programs for the students, teachers, and staff of the Northern York County School District through fundraising events, corporate/business partnerships, event sponsors, and donations.
